I’ve always envied (in a good way) the Castelli range of cycle clothing for the quality and style, and because of the logo, which is a scorpion on a circular red background – I’m a Scorpio 🙂
When I bought this item last week I wasn’t particularly fixated on Castelli, but I’d noticed at cafe stops some of my fellow riders were wearing them, when the hot weather dictated us all unzipping our jerseys to cool off.
I have to say it’s a bit different to the other base layers I’ve bought in the past, as for one thing it’s incredibly light and thin, being made of a mesh material consisting of 100% polyester (the other popular material being Merino wool).
The idea of a base layer is to wick away the sweat from your body leaving you feeling a lot less sticky and as a result cooler, and this one certainly did that. In fact, it’s proved to be the most effective base layer I’ve worn to date. BTW, when not wearing a base layer a jersey tends to hold the sweat next to your skin and you end up feeling cold, which in cooler weather isn’t much fun.
The Castelli base layer does feel different to others I’ve worn in that it has a much more figure-hugging feel to it. This felt a bit strange at first, but I soon got used to it when I felt much dryer too. And when I take it off at the end of a ride my back feels barely damp. Compare that to just wearing a jersey on a hot summer’s day when my back has been soaked in sweat – sorry, that had to be said – and you’ll begin to realise why I won’t go out without wearing a base layer.
So for under £30.00 this is a definite thumbs-up for the Castelli Base layer.
Check it out here at the Wiggle Online Store.
There is also a short-sleeved base layer version here.
